Service  Served with the 13th Native Infantry during the Punjal Campaign in 1848-49. Present at the passage of the Chenab and battle of Goojerat, and the pursuit of the Sikhs and Aifghans. Medal and Clasp. Served as Interpreter and Quarter Master of the 13th Native Infantry in the Sontal Campaign. Present in several petty skirmishes. Served in the 13th Native Infantry and Cawnpore Levy during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58. Present at the Mutiny, Lucknow, 30th May defeat of Mutineers, 31st May; action of Chinhut, 30th June ; defence of Residency, from 30th June to 22nd November 1857. Present in four sorties, and commanded two. Present during the fighting at Cawnpore, from 28th November to 5th December; battle of Cawnpore, 6th December 1857. Field service in Futtehpore District during Oude Campaign of 1858. Mentioned three times in Despatches of General Inglis G. 0., 12th December 1857; and in Despatch, G. O., 22nd December 1857, Mentioned in Sortie Despatches of Major Apthorp, Major Lowe, Captain Hardinge, and Lieutenant Aitken, G.O., 28th December 1857. Mentioned in Engineering Despatch of Captain Anderson, G. 0., 15th December 1857. Received the thanks of the Government, G. G. 0., 8th December 1857. Medal and Defence Clasp, and recommended for Brevet-Majority on promotion to Regimental Captain, and one year's extra service.
