Service  Brevet-Lieutenant-Colonel Barwell served with the Force under Brigadier Wheeler in the Punjab, 1848-49. Medal. Was officiat­ing Major of Brigade at Lucknow at the time of the outbreak, May 1857. Continued to serve in that capacity until the final relief of the Lucknow Garrison in November 1857, Also as Fort Adjutant from the commencement of the siege of the Eesidency, Mentioned in the Despatch of Sir John Inglis, K.C.B. Eeceived the thanks of Government; promoted to the rank of Brevet-Major. Medal and Clasp, and one year's service. Served as Brigade Major to the 6th Brigade in the Field; and present at the battle of Cawnpore, in that capacity, on the 6th December 1857. Thanked in Despatch on the subject. Served asBrigade-Major to a Force ordered to march through the Etawah and Mynpoorie Districts to Futtehghur under Brigadier Walpole, C.B. Served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General of the 3rd division of the Army at the siege and capture of Lucknow. Mentioned in the Despatch of Brigadier-General Walpole to the Commander-in-Chief. Clasp. Served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General to a Force ordered to march through Oude to Rohilcund; present at the attack on Fort Kooyd and action of Allygunge. Thanked on both occasions in the Despatches. Served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General of the whole Force that entered Rohilcund. Present at the re-occupation of Shahjehanpore and battle of Bareilly, 5th May 1858. Thanked by Lord Clyde in his Despatch on the subject. Served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant General of the Rohilcund and Kumaon Divisions, in the action on the Sardah, 10th January 1859. Wounded slightly. Thanked by Brigadier General Sir R. Walpole, K.C.B., and brought to the notice of the Commander-in-Chief, in Despatch. Promoted to the rank of Brevet-Lieutenant-Colonel.
