Service  Lieutenant Bernard served with the 3rd Native Infantry with the Force under Colonel Mackeson, C.B., in Huzara, and the Hussunzaie Campaign, 1852-53. Present at the affairs of the Black Mountain and taking of the Fort. As Adjutant Officiating 2nd Sikh Infantry served in the pursuit of the 55th Native Infantry Mutineers to the borders of Raghan under Major Becher, C.B., and in the subsequent operations in the district during July and August 1857. As Adjutant, Huzara Goorkha Battalion, served throughout the Mahsood Wuzeeree Campaign with the Tank Field Force under Brigadier General W. Chamberlain, C.B., in 1860. Present at the repulse of the attack on the British Camp at Paloseen, 23rd April 1860. At the storming of the heights of Burrurah, 4th May 1860, and in the subsequent operations leading to the occupation of Raneegorum and burning of Mookeen,
