Service  Lieutenant Champain marched with the Bengal Sappers and Miners from Roorkee to Meerut, on the outbreak of the Mutiny in 57. Served with the Force under Brigadier Wilson, and was present at the two actions on the Hindun and Badlee-ka-Serai, and throughout the siege of Delhi. Thanked in Field Force Orders by the General Commanding for constructing a battery in one night, which, was afterwards, by the Chief Engineers orders, called Champains Battery. Wounded slightly, 13th September 57. Commanded the Sappers and Miners on their march from Delhi to Lucknow, including the capture of Futtehpore-Sikree, and minor affairs in the Agra District, under Colonel Cotton. Also at the Alum Bagh under Sir James Outram. Served as Adjutant throughout the siege of Lucknow. Brought to notice of His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief in Brigadier Napiers Despatch, 5th April 58. Served as Executive Engineer under Brigadier Douglas, in the Ghazee-pore and Shahabad Districts. Thanked in Captain McMullins Despatch, 25th August 58. Present at the final capture of Jugdespore, and at various minor affairs in the Oude District, including the pursuit of the rebels to the Kymore Hills. Brought to notice of His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief in Brigadier Douglas Despatch, 24th December 58, Medal and 2 Clasps.
