Service  Assistant-Surgeon Gayer served with the advance Force from Allahabad, under Major Renaud, in Medical Charge of the 13th Irregular Cavalry, from 30th June 57 till the 12th July. Served with H. M.s 84th Regiment, from 13th July till 7th August, in the actions of Futtehpore, Aoung, Pandoo Nuddee, Cawnpore, Oonao, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd battles at Busseerutgunge. With the battery of Royal Artillery, commanded by Captain Maude, from 8th to 21st August, in the action of Bithoor. Did duty at Cawnpore Field Hospital, from 22nd August to 18th September. Served with H. M.s 5th Fusiliers, from 19th September to 17th October, in the actions of Muggerawarra, Alum Bagh, and the first relief of Lucknow. Did duty in the Residency with H. M.s 78th Regiment from 18th October to 27th November. Did duty at Field Hospital from 28th November to 6th December. Present at the defeat of the Gwalior rebels at Cawnpore, 7th December 57. Medal and Clasp.
