Service  Lieutenant Woodgate served with the Volunteer Cavalry and was present with General Havelocks Force in the advance from Allahabad, in the actions of Futtehpore, Aoung, Pandoo Nuddee, and Cawnpore. Present at Oonao, Busseerutgunge, 29th July 57, and Busseerutgunge, 5th August 59; Barby-ka-Chowkee, Bithoor, Mungulwarra, and Alum Bagh, first assault and relief of Lucknow. Served as Assistant Field Engineer during the remainder of the defence of Lucknow. Present with the Army of occupation under Major-General Sir James Outram, and at the final assault and capture of Lucknow. Commanded the Cavalry of the Kupoorthulla Contingent in all the actions in which that Force was engaged, including the storm and capture of Gohunia, and several minor affairs. Received the thanks of the Right Honble the Governor-General of India in his Order, dated 15th of April 59. Medal and 2 Clasps.
