Service  Captain Young served throughout the Campaign in Affghanistan, under Sir G. Pollock. Present at the forcing of the Khyber Pass, 5th April 42. Medal. Honorably mentioned in Detachment Orders when Commanding the Bear Guard, in the retreat from the Fort Ally Musjid, in the Khyber Pass, Cabul, 24th January 42. In April 42 took a Despatch of great importance from Brigadier Wild, to Major-General Sir J. McCaskill, running the gauntlet through the enemy, from the top of Lundekhanna Pass, in the Khyber, to the foot of it; out of the five sepoys who accompanied him, only two survived, the other three were shot dead. He was thanked by Brigadier Wild, and Sir J. McCaskill, in person. During the retreat from the Fort of Ally Musjid, in the Khyber Pass, Cabul, 24th January 48, CaptainYoung went back under a very severe fire from the Fort, which the enemy entered the moment it was evacuated by the English Force, and saved the life of Ensign B. M. Nott, now Captain, in the 64th Native Infantry, who was lying in a deserted doolee, prostrate from sickness; also rallied a party of one Havildar and some 20 Sepoys, which he headed, and who were the means of saving the lives of one Native Officer and several Sepoys. The above was done in the face of a victorious and barbarous enemy.
