The first part of this index, 1780 to 1866, is an index of wills from the Supreme, or Recorders Courts. These were replaced by High Courts (in the Presidency Capitals) and newly established District Courts (in the various major cities in the Districts) which were established at varying dates from 1862 onwards, which the second (only partly completed index) covers.
