Lists of N.C.O's who worked for the Indian Army 1861 to 1947
European NCOs and Privates of the East India Companys Army 1708-1861 and the Indian Army 1861-1947
These Corps, largely of Non-Commissioned Officers, were initially formed from those serving in the 'Town Major's Lists' of the East India Companny's Armies (Note: Town Major's Lists were styled 'Effective Supernumeraries' in the Madras Presidency.
After the reforms following the Indian Mutiny, and as the former EIC NCOs retired, their functions were taken over by NCOs of various regiments of the British Army who volunteered to transfer to the Indian Army. Although such transfer was strictly considered temporary, most on the Unattached List ended their careers in it. Transfer to this list was popular with men who had married and who had families in India and who wished to remain there when their regiment was about to be posted 'home' to England or to another part of the Empire.
