Sub-title  Moktapore H. & S. M., Tirhoot District
Page nos.  33-34
Description  Assistant at Moktapore Factory, under John Mackenzie [before 1857-58]. “He was a very powerful Scotchman and did not hit it off with the natives, and when they did not carry out his orders he would, what he called, ‘fetch them a chip’ which meant a blow as from a sledge hammer and down they would go and so he was generally in trouble. However, the natives got the better of him at last, for one day as he was riding along (this was at Sebnuggur, the outwork of Kumtoul Factory), a tailor who he had illused crept up behind him and caught him a blow over the eye with a lathie. From this Anderson lost the sight of one eye, which cooled him down considerably.”
Indexer  (1) An outwork was an outlying indigo factory, a subsidiary of a head factory or “concern”. (2) A lathie is a stick, club or bludgeon.
