Description  Built Seereepore Factory, 1865. Was called from Chuckea, while fighting the caterpillars which swarmed in 1865, to build Seereepore for the Maharajah of Hutwa, at a place called Dularpore, nine miles from Chuckea. Took up “his abode in a tent and before long uprose [sic] a factory with a fair cultivation,” viz., he made 75 maunds of indigo with two pairs of vats and 250 bighas of indigo. The next year, “he had 18 pairs of vats with press and cake house and bungalow and 2,900 bighas of indigo and made 700 maunds of indigo and should have had more but was short of carts.” Was sub-manager under Neil MacDonald.    
Indexer  (1) A Maharajah, or Mahárájá, was a supreme king, or a person deemed holy or of high rank. (2) A bungalow was a thatched cottage of one floor, or any house standing apart on its own grounds. (3) A bighá is a measure of land equal to 1600 square yards in Bengal. (4) A maund was a measure of weight, containing 82-2/7 lbs. in Bengal.
