| Surname | Wilson | | Forename | Minden J. | | Chapter | Reminiscences of Behar | | Sub-title | Chapter II. Tiger-shooting--Midnight Alarm--Death by Drowning of H-- Holgate | | Page nos. | 119-120 | | Description | Wilson’s friend, Mr. Holgate, was drowned shortly after returning [from the tiger-shooting party at Sirreepore Kablassa, March 1848]. Holgate was staying with Wilson’s brother [James Wilson] at Kumtoul. Minden Wilson and Holgate borrowed a boat “for the purpose of having a row, but, finding the stream heavy to pull against, and the breeze favourable,” Wilson suggested getting a sheet to improvise a sail, then ran home to his bungalow to get one. Returning to the river, Wilson could not see anything of Holgate. Thinking Holgate had tired of waiting and strolled on, Wilson hoisted the sheet and sailed up the river, expecting to come upon his missing friend. Not doing so, he returned the boat to its owner, and started to search for Holgate on foot, but could see or hear nothing of him. “Three days passed, and then the village-watchman came and gave us the information that the body of a European was floating in the river a little way down, and this was poor H—. We got him out and buried him under a tree to the North-West of the big bungalow on the border of the factory serat.” | | Indexer Notes | (1) A bungalow was a thatched cottage of one floor, or any house standing apart on its own grounds. (2) The author, Minden J. Wilson, may have used the word, serat, to refer to ziráat, which was a cultivated farm or field. |
