Description  The prisoner—Warris Ali, a darogah who had invited the rebels to loot the treasury at Mozufferpore—was placed in an ekah, and sent off to Segowlie under an Irregular Cavalry escort, to be dealt with by Major Holmes. However, Holmes returned the prisoner to Mozufferpore with a private communication, “to say that his men were much averse to having the peeler hanged at Segowlie, he being a Moslem.”    
Indexer Notes  (1) A darogah, or dárogá, was a manager, superintendent or overseer, particularly of a custom or excise station, or of a distillery. (2) An ekah, or ekka, was a small light, two-wheeled carriage made chiefly of bamboo and without a seat; it was drawn by a single horse or pony. (3) This index entry was extracted from the author’s [Minden J. Wilson’s] description of his observations and experiences of the Mutiny of 1857-58 [pp. 196-210].
