Surname  Mackenzie
Forename  John
Chapter  Tirhoot and Its Inhabitants of the Past
Sub-title  Biographical sketch: John Mackenzie
Page nos.  221-222
Description  Met Lord Elphinstone, who offered Mackenzie the management of his Ceylon estates; Mackenzie did not accept. Mackenzie and John Beckwith purchased the Jeelwarpur Indigo Concern, 1848. Some years after, took a trip home with his family; returned again to India, 1855. Again went home, January 1857, and thence to Canada. The long winters proving too much, Mackenzie and his family returned to Tirhoot, 1862. Next, went to Naini Tal, where a house was built. “After a time as all his daughters were married or about to be, [Mackenzie] made up his mind to leave India for good, and eventually retired to Island Bank, Inverness, where he died in 1868.” Buried in the cemetery of Tumnahurich “where a handsome tombstone marks the spot where lies one of the finest and best of men. Such a leader to guide young heads in our indigo troubles at the present moment would be, indeed, a blessing.”
