Surname  Begg
Forename  David
Title  Dr.
Chapter  Tirhoot and Its Inhabitants of the Past
Sub-title  Biographical sketch: Dr. Begg
Page nos.  226-227
Description  Came out to India as an assistant manager to Dr. Charles Mackinnon, late 1830s; became the planters’ doctor shortly afterward. Took indigo seeds from all the owners of big indigo concerns, and made a fair income over what he made as planters’ doctor. Bought a share in Christie and Co., an indigo seed firm of Cawnpore, which then became Begg, Christie and Co. Purchased Kanti, Motepore, Belsund and Bekonpore Factories c.1853—“ his chief and trusted manager being David Russel Crawford, who conducted the purchase and clinched the bargain. As often happens a hasty word destroys the friendship of years. David Crawford thought he should have a share in this purchase, and wrote to David Begg to this effect strongly. From that day the two friends became cuts and David Crawford left his comfortable berth at Kanti and purchased Futteteah Factory.”
