CommentIndex of Indigo Planters in Bihar taken from "History of Behar Indigo Factories; Reminiscences of Bihar; Tirhoot
and its inhabitants of the past.". by Minden Wilson 1908.

Surname  Finch
Forename  Joseph I
Chapter  Tirhoot and Its Inhabitants of the Past
Sub-title  Biographical sketch: Justin Finch
Page nos.  234
Description  Father of Justin I (fourth son). “A man of note.” The first of his family to come to India. Got attached to Sir Eyre Coote’s staff: was with him in the Carnatic during the war with Tippoo Saheb, where he greatly distinguished himself. When Hyder Ali’s standard bearer challenged anyone of the enemy to meet him in single combat, Joseph rode forth and attacked the man, slew him, and presented the Standard to Sir Eyre Coote. Received a medal for this act of gallantry, with the inscription, Joseph Finch, Ob Res Fortiter Gestas Apud Sholeingurh, F.C., A.D. MDCCLXXXI.. Buried at the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Patna: over his grave is a large slab with an inscription giving the history, with full details, of this “remarkable” man’s career.
Indexer Notes  The first of the Finch family in Bengal was Joseph, who built Shahpore Oundie factory in 1790. In 1905, when Minden J. Wilson wrote his book, the fourth generation consisted of seven male heirs: six in Tirhoot, and a priest in France. The forenames were handed down from one generation to the next. The indexer has used the Roman numerals I, II and III to distinguish the different individuals. This convention was *not* employed by the author.
