CommentIndex of Indigo Planters in Bihar taken from "History of Behar Indigo Factories; Reminiscences of Bihar; Tirhoot
and its inhabitants of the past.". by Minden Wilson 1908.

Surname  Gibbon
Forename  Tom
Chapter  Tirhoot and Its Inhabitants of the Past
Sub-title  Biographical sketch: Tom Gibbon
Page nos.  247-249
Description  The author, Minden J. Wilson, first met Gibbon when the latter was manager of Hatti Ousti Factory. Gibbon spent a good number of his youngest days at sea. Found his way up to Tirhoot to indigo, and was lured into sugar—“that golden dream that swamped so many good men in 1846-48.” On Wilson’s arrival in India, he was sent to Hatti Ousti to manufacture some sugarcane belonging to the estate of David Brodie. On Brodie’s death, Gibbon undertook to manufacture the cane with his machinery at his factory of Hatti for the benefit of the estate. Gibbon found that he could make only molasses, so Wilson (aged seventeen) was sent to see if he could do better. Gibbon met Wilson “in a most kind and cordial manner, but as poor old Tom stuttered very badly I had some difficulty in making out what he said.” Wilson would never know what his success was, as he was recalled suddenly to Kuntoul. Wilson had some “grand wild duck shooting” during his off hours at Hatti Ousti.
