Description  When the author, Minden J. Wilson, first met him, Swaine was manager of Doudpore under David R. Crawford, 1848. Swaine was a Devonshire man; came out [to India] to William Farley Lethbridge in Gaya in the Rhotas hills. Swaine eventually married Lethbridge’s daughter. Swaine’s first berth in Tirhoot was Dinamutt, the outwork of Peepra in Champarun. Next, went to Raghaie Factory, an outwork of Kanti. Next, promoted to the sub-management of Doudpore; then, superintendent of all Dr. Begg’s factories at Doudpore, Motipore, Belsund, and Bekonpore; finally, promoted to management of Kanti. Got into bad health; doctor ordered him away “for a change”, 1861; went up-country, dying at Cawnpore, where he was buried. Left several sons and daughters: “His eldest son, George, became manager and proprietor of Attur Factory and turned out a very smart and clever young man.”
Indexer Notes  (1) An outwork was an outlying indigo factory, a subsidiary of a head factory or “concern”. (2) See also index entries for “Swaine, C.”
