Description  Began life in [India, as an indigo planter, at] Champarun. The author, Minden Wilson, knew him first when Brown was at Hattowrie Factory. Brown got the management of Hattowrie from Bob Taylor, who owned Hattowrie, and also Nawadah Factory, where Tom Slade managed. Brown and Slade both “had the promise of a four anna share to be paid for out of profits.” Taylor dying not long after making this arrangement, the properties were sold, providing Brown and Slade handsome bonuses in exchange for giving up their shares in the factories. Brown and Slade purchased Doulutpore Factory. Not long afterward, while on his way to Peepra Factory and stopping to rest at Mozufferpore, Brown took ill with Bright’s disease: he died a day or two later c.1853; buried at Mozufferpore. “He was a right good fellow and a great favourite with everyone.”
