| Surname | Strachan | | Forename | Chris. | | Chapter | Tirhoot and Its Inhabitants of the Past | | Sub-title | Biographical sketch: Chris. Strachan | | Page nos. | 286 | | Description | The author, Minden J. Wilson, thought Strachan was sent out to India by the London Indigo Association. Wilson first met him when he [Strachan] was sub-manager of Chetwarrah Factory. Nicknamed the Count. Took charge of Shahpore Mircha when Baddeley went home to England; when Baddeley returned, Strachan purchased Hursingpore, where he did very well. Strachan was “a very kind-hearted old chap. He had picked up a youngster who had been an apprentice in one of Green’s ships, and taking a liking to the boy (his name was Evans) he gave him the run of his teeth and some small pay. Unfortunately Master Evans one day, while left alone at the factory, finding it dull, started shooting sparrows on the verandah roof. The consequence was that he set the place on fire, and Strachan had to pay for a new roof, and Evans was asked to go.” Strachan retired home to England, where “he lived a wandering life.” Left two sons; both dead. “His daughters married, one at home, a solicitor, the other a major in the army, and the other a man in the Canal Department. Old Strachan left his children well off as he had shares in Dulsingserai, Hursingpore, and a tea garden Darjeeling way.” | | Indexer Notes | See also index entries for: “Strachan, C.”; “Strachan, Christopher”; and, “Strachan, Mr.” |
