Detail  [Pages 85-87. At his residence, Summerland Place, Exeter, aged 72, John Macdonald, Esq. Fellow of the Royal and Asiatic Societies, formerly Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Clan-Alpine regiment. The only son of the celebrated Flora Macdonald, who assisted Prince Charles in evading the English soldiers in 1746. Became a captain in the corps of engineers, Bengal establishment. In 1794-96, at Bencoolen, and at St Helena, he carried out diurnal observations of the variation in the magnetic needle. In 1807 was the chief engineer at Fort Marlborough. An author]
