CommentVol 1 F.W. Abbatt to RHE Hutton-Squire

At a meeting of the Coopers Hill Society in 1959 the lack of any biographical record of students admitted to the Royal Indian Engineering College, Coopers Hill, was discussed. This register is an attempt to complete a record. It may be regarded as an appendix to ‘A Short History of the Royal Indian Engineering College, Coopers Hill’ by J.G.P. Cameron, C.I.E., issued by the Coopers Hill Society for private circulation in 1960.

The names of the students admitted have been taken from the calendars published annually by authority and preserved in the library of the India Office, Whitehall. The biographical details have been compiled mainly from information in the magazines mentioned on page 28 of Cameron’s History.

Other  If he had lived in a period when research was organised and valued he would have established a great reputation. Even so, in this field the whole irrigation practice in India stands his debtor. His silt diagrams for designing river silting channels, his self-regulating distributing gates, his crop experiments, his demonstration of the loss of water between its ingress at the head of a canal and its final distribution, these are some of the subjects which engaged his attention and were of immense practical advantage in the construction and working of canals in India. As a mark of respect and in recognition of the valuable research work done by him, the Kennedy Medal was instituted and the first one struck from the dies was presented to Mrs. Kennedy. Publications: Report on Irrigation in the United Provinces, Report on Irrigation in the USA, Kennedy's Diagrams
