Born Neath, Glamorgan, 20 Jan 1782. Father ran an inn in Carmarthen. Entered EIC service in Oct 1800. In 1826 he returned to Wales as a Major with injured health. The failure of a bank at Calcutta caused him to sell his estate, Job's Well. In 1837 he returned to duty. Heavily involved, as a brigadier, with operations in Afghanistan. Married 1st 5 Oct 1805 Letitia dau. of Henry Swinhoe, Solicitor of the Supreme Court, Calcutta, and 2nd 26 June 1843 Rosa Wilson dau. of Captain Dore, HM 3rd Buffs. 14 children by first wife (5 of whom survive) including Robert Murray Nott, 64th Bengal NI and his eldest son, Charles Augustus Nott, barrister of the Supreme Court, Calcutta, who died 9 June 1841.
