Aged 45. Joined the Royal Navy in 1809, aged 11. In 1815 became a midshipman on the HEICS Carnatic, and later transferred to the Company cruiser Antelope. In 1818 embarked for England, hoping for an army commission. Became a castaway. Joined in naval fighting in South America. In 1824 went again to India, hoping to fight in Burma war in marine service, but arrived too late. In 1825 he joined the country merchant service on the Forbes steamer as chief officer.
