Born at Chatham, 1800. Became a Lieut. at 16. ""At the end of 1817 he was paid off, and went third mate of a free-trader to Calcutta. Returning home in 1819 he got appointed to the Bengal marine (pilot service) of India, where he served until 1824, when he volunteered for the Arracan war, and received the command of the East India Company's cutter Matchless, and a division of gun-boats."" He returned to Calcutta in 1827. He began to agitate for a steam connection between England and India. Except for Mr Loch, the EIC directors were opposed. In Oct. 1829 he was sent with dispatches for Bombay on a trial run to see if the Red Sea route was practicable. He was to join the Enterprise, the first steamer from England to India, at Suez on the 6 Dec 1829. It did not appear, so he made the journey alone by an open boat along the Red Sea without chart or compass. He reached Juddah, 600 miles away, in 6 1/2 days, and heard that the Enterprise had broken down between Bengal and Bombay. He built the 8 halting places and 3 hotels between Cairo and Suez.
