Aged 52, a commodore of the first class, Assistant Superintendent, and Captain of the Flag in the Indian navy. Born of highly respectable parents on the 6 April 1798. His mother was the only dau. of John Calland, esq. formerly of the civil service, and a member of Council at Madras. From the age of 13 served briefly in the royal navy. Was ill from typhus, on his recovery in 1812 he was admitted through the interest of Sir Evan Nepean to the maritime service of the EIC. Numerous battles. Lieut., 1824. Captain, 1839. In England on sick certificate, 1840-44. The death of Sir Robert Oliver in Aug 1848 made him for a time acting Superintendent of the navy, until relieved by Commodore Lushington in Feb. 1849.
