John Gavin Drummond, C.B. Quartermaster-Gen. of the Bengal Army. He entered the army as Ensign in 1808, became Lieut. in 1812, Captain 1825, Major 1837, and Lieut.-Colonel 1843. He served during the Nepaul Campaign, 1814-15, the Burmese War 1814 and 1825, as Deputy Assistant Quartermaster-General, was present at the action of Maharajpore in 1843, throughout the latter part of the Sutlej campaign, including the battle of Sobraon, and at the siege and surrender of Mooltan, and action of Goojerat. For these services he had received three medals, the bronze star, and the companionship of the Bath. To unwearied industry, and great experience in the duties of his department, Col. Drummond united a kindliness of disposition, a simplicity of character, and a warmth of hospitality that endeared him to as extensive a circle of friends as any man in India ever possessed. |
