At Newport, Monmouthshire in his 62nd year. Born 6 June 1791 at Southampton, the eldest son of Capt. Charles Meredith Deane, 24th Light Dragoons, by Ann, eldest dau. of John Deane, esq. of Hartley Court, Berkshire. Mrs Deane was authoress of ""Tour through the Upper Provinces of Hindostan in 1804"" and died at Bath in 1847, leaving two sons, Charles, the subject of this memoir, and the Rev. John Bathurst Deane. Cornet 24th Light Dragoons, age 14, joined them at Cawnpore in 1806 as Lieut. by purchase. Cornetcy was a reward for his father's gallantry at a battle at Delhi and was given by Lake. In the Burmese War. Buried at Malpas. Married in 1823 Augusta, 3rd dau. of the late Dr Lemprière, author of the classical dictionary, several sons and one married dau.] |
