Born at Cruckton, near Shrewsbury, 18 Feb. 1785, the eldest son of Richard Jenkins, esq. of Bicton, Salop, by Constantia Harriot, dau. of Richard Ravenscroft, esq. of Wrexham. Appointed a writer, Bombay Establishment, 1800. ""His aptitude for acquiring the Arabic and Persian languages having attracted the notice of the governing authorities, he was in 1805 chosen assistant Secretary to Sir Barry Close, Bart. Resident at the Poona Durbar. Afterwards he was elected President at Scindia's Court, where he continued some years; and then transferred to the Residency at Nagpore, in Berat."" Distinguished himself there in 1817-18. After an absence of 27 years he returned to England. Elected to the EIC Board as a director. Married in 1824 Eliza Helen, eldest dau. of Hugh Spottiswode, esq. by whom he had 9 children] |
