Born 21 June 1784 the 4th son of John Arthur, esq. of Plymouth by Catharine, dau. of Thomas Cornish, esq. of Portsmouth. Ensign 91st Foot, 1804. In 1841 made baronet, and also appointed Governor of Bombay. Resigned due to ill health in 1846. Married in May 1814 Eliza Orde Usher, 2nd dau. of the late Lieut.-Gen. Sir John Frederick Sigismund Smith, R.A., 7 sons & 5 daus. They included Charles Viney, an officer in the Bombay light cavalry, who died in 1847; Edward Penfold, Lieut. 1st Bombay light cavalry, and Lieut. of police in Scinde; Sigismund Montagu, Lieut. 3rd Bombay light cavalry; John Raynor, Bombay CS; Leonard Augustus, Lieut. 7th Bengal light cavalry; and Catharine, who married in 1844 Henry Bartle Edward Frere, Commissioner for the Government of Scinde] |
