Bonnyman, Surg. Maj and Hon. Bde. Surg. James, M.D., Army Medical Department (Bombay) SH243, HAAL:79, HAAL:80, HAAL:81, HAAL:82, retired; MR7 (2 refs.) [by his own account, only reached Quetta] "On the 20th March 1880 crossed the Frontier at Sibi, and was in charge of No. 1 Base Hospital at Quetta, and Senior Medical Officer there, from the 5th April to the 9th October 1880." [The southern boundary of Afghanistan had not yet been firmly recognised by the British, but most (excepting those in favor of annexing Kandahar to India) already considered it was, or would be, the Kamran Range of mountains, a considerable distance west of Quetta. Bonnyman was not the only one to claim the war medal by venturing no farther west than Quetta. (Ed.)]
