Forces at Kandahar, "For operations in Southern Afghanistan during 2nd phase of the war between 3rd Sept. 1879 and 25th Sept. 1880," "Present at Battle near Girishk July 14th 1880; Maiwand July 27th 1880; Sortie Deh Khojah Aug. 16th 1880," "I hereby declare that I was present at the actions mentioned in the margin, doing all in my power to aid the wounded, without distinction of Creed or Race." Camp 23, Van der Klugt; photo NAM (negs. 01245, 46638) Simpson 19, (neg. 46639) Simpson 20; primarily at Kandahar, but traveled up to Kabul on departure to India via Khyber; cited in MS diary of Gunner (5066) William Hamilton Williams, q v.: 1) on retreat from Maiwand, 28 July 1880: "...I met Father Jackson the R.C. Chaplain, a great favorite with the column, and came along with him walking by the spare gun carriage." 2) at Battle of Kandahar 1 Sept. 1880: "...[a shell] came so close to the Revd. Father Jackson, as to knock that gentleman down with its force, while he was following up the Infantry attending to the sick and wounded. He however soon regained his feet and gathering up his Clerical robes ran after the Infantry to the general satisfaction of all."
