[became a popular hero, but in early stage of the war he came close to being tried for indescrimate and questionable hangings of the Kabul populace, especially many of those who were wealthy and whose wealth was confiscated. His actions were subject to investigation by a board of Army Officers at Kabul who were loathe to find guilt on the part of their Commander and satisfied their charge by condeming to death a few Afghans who were almost certainly guiltless of the any crime. These findings were clearly contrary to the Government of India’s intentions, but Roberts’s resounding victory at Kandahar 1 Sept. 1880 ended any further desire to examine the earlier affair (Ed.)]
