| Surname | Mitford | | First Name(s) | R C W | | Rank | Lieutenant | | Regiment | late 3rd Europeans | | Commissions | Ensign, 25 Jul 55 / Lieut, 30 Apr 58 | | Service | Lieutenant Mitford served with the 3rd Europeans at the outbreak of the Mutiny at Agra, in 57; and was present at the 1st battle of Agra on the 5th July, in which he carried the colors; at the 2nd battle on the 10th October, affair of Futtehpore-Sikree, together with other minor actions in the Agra District. He was appointed to do duty with Hodsons Horse in March 58, and was present with that Corps at the capture of Lucknow by Lord Clyde. Medal and Clasp. Commanded a Detachment of Hodsons Horse at Nawabgung, Bara, Bunki, present at the action of Selimpore (charger wounded), and was highly mentioned by the Governor-General in 58, for "gallantry in capturing a party of the rebels in the village of Bibipore, with 20 dismounted Sowars." He then proceeded with 150 Sabres of Hodsons Horse to join Major Bulwers Force at Jabrowlee, and on the 16th October 58, charged and defeated a large body of Rebel Infantry near that place, receiving a slight wound. In the action of Jabrowlee, 23rd October, the Detachment of Hodsons Horse, under his Command, captured 3 of the enemys guns, and cut up a large number of their Infantry. In this action Lieutenant Mitford was severely wounded while assisting an Officer of the Uncovenanted Civil Service, who was attacked by several of the rebels at the same time, and would probably have been cut down, but for timely aid. On partially recovering from the effects of his wound, he joined the 3rd Regiment of Hodsons Horse as Adjutant, and served with them through the Trans-Gogra Campaign of 59, to the final surrender of the rebels in December of that year. Recommended by Lord Clyde for the " Victoria Cross." |
