Present as Adjutant, 14th Native Infantry, at investment of Ferozepore by Sikh Army, in 45. Present as Adjutant, and also commanded Detachment of 14th Native Infantry at battle of Ferozeshuhur. Medal. Mentioned twice in Despatches of this action. Mentioned specially for " gallant behaviour" in the Despatch of Sir W. Gilbert, and Despatch of Sir John Littler. In consequence of the above, at once appointed to the Quarter-Master Generals Department and Staff of the 3rd Division, commanded by Sir Robert Dick. Present as D. A. Q. M. G. at battle and storm of the Entrenchments of Sobraon, 10th February 46. Clasp. Mentioned in the Despatch of Brigadier Stacy, who succeeded to the Command on Sir Robert Dick being mortally wounded; also in that, dated 13th February 46, of the Commander-in-Chief, Lord Gough, and in G. G. O., dated 14th February 46. For Colonel (then lieutenant) Patons services in this Campaign, the Court of Directors, in a Public Despatch, recorded their approbation of his conduct, and recommended him to the protection of the Supreme Government in India, as stated in a demi-official communication to the Government of India. Served as Senior Officer, Quarter-Master Generals Department, at the reduction of the Hill Fortress of Kot Kangra, in 46. Mentioned in Despatch of Brigadier Wheeler; also in Field Force Orders, dated Kangra, 29th May 46; and acknowledged in letter No. 216, dated 15th June 46, from the Governor-General to the Commander-in-Chief. Served again as Senior Officer, Quarter-Master Generals Department, with the Advance Column of the Field Force ordered to Cashmere, in 46. Mentioned in District Orders by Brigadier Wheeler, Commanding the Column; and also in Orders by Sir John Littler. Served as Senior Officer, Quarter-Master Generals Department, at the reduction of the Fort of Rungul Mungul, Punjab, 48. Mentioned in the Despatch, dated 15th October 48, of Brigadier Wheeler, Commanding the Force; also in the Orders of the same date. This service acknowledged in a letter from Adjutant-General of the Army, to Officer Commanding Punjab Division. Served in the Punjab Campaign, 48, 49, being attached as D. A. Q. M. G. to the Head Quarters of Lord Gough. Present at the affair of Ramnuggur, on the Chenab, November 48. Appointed specially as Senior Departmental Officer to conduct the Column from the Main Army, under Sir Joseph Thackwell, at the passage of the Chenab and battle of Sadoolapore, 1st to 6th December 48. Mentioned twice in the Despatch, dated 6th December 48, of Sir Joseph Thackwell; also acknowledged in that, dated 10th December 48, of the Commander-in-Chief, and in a General Order by the Governor-General. Present with Army Head Quarters at the battle of Chillianwallah. (Wounded severely.) Medal. Mentioned in Despatch of His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief, and in G. G. O., dated 27th January 49; also by the Court of Directors, published in G. G. O. Served as D. A. Q. M. G. with the expedition against the Affreedies, and forcing the Kohat Pass, near Peshawur, under Sir Charles Napier. Mentioned in the Despatch, dated 16th February 50, of Sir Colin Campbell. Served with the Force employed to suppress the Googaira Insurrection, Punjab, 57; and commanded the Field Detachment sent from Lahore, which was thrice engaged. Promoted to rank of Major by Brevet for services in the Punjab Campaign. Mentioned twenty-seven times in Despatches and Orders.
