Service  Major Pownall served with the Force sent against the Bheels in 37; with the Force sent against Rajah Maun Singh, of Joudpore, in 39. Served in Bundlecund in 43. Commanded a Detachment of the 39th Native Infantry in the Beeghora Jungles, sent for the protection of wood-cutters. Was attacked and surrounded on all sides on the night of the 10th April 43, and had a volley fired through, his tent by a large body of insurgents, who were repulsed before the arrival of some Troops sent to the assistance of Major Pownall. Served with the Brigade under Colonel Yates, in the Gwalior Campaign of 43, under Sir J. Grey, and remained for the protection of the Camp at Punniar. Bronze Star. Served during the whole of the Mutiny at Dehra Ismail Khan, 57, 58.
