Service  Captain Smith served with the 58th Native Infantry in the Reserve Force under Major-General Hill, of the Army of Punjab of 48, 49. Served in Military Charge of two Regiments of Goorkhas (Nepalese Troops), throughout the Campaign against the mutineers of 57, 58. Was present at the actions fought by the Goorkha Troops, and with them accompanied Brigadier-General Franks Column, 4th Division of the Army, throughout Oude. Was present at the attack on Chandah and affair of Umeerapoor, on the 19th February 58; and battle of Sultanpore, on the 24th of the same month, at which action he acted on the Personal Staff of General Franks, as his Orderly Officer and extra A.D.C. Received the Generals thanks on the Field for services rendered on that day. Was also mentioned in his Despatch, and afterwards the same approbation of his services was expressed by General Franks, Commanding 4th Division of the Army, vide his letter to Colonel Birch. Was present throughout the siege and capture of Lucknow; holding Military charge of two Regiments of Goorkhas during the whole of that time; and was, for services at the attack on the Begum Kotee at Lucknow, mentioned in the Despatch of General Lugard amongst the Roll of Officers who were deemed deserving of Honorable mention. Received the thanks of Government. Received the thanks of the Commander-in-Chief. His conduct having been brought to the favorable notice of the Commander-in-Chief by the above letter, he received the thanks of the Court of Directors. The above thanks were given to him for his conduct at the outbreak in India, in June 57. Medal and Clasp.
