Service  Major Stafford served during the Mutiny, 57, 58. Present at the siege and capture of Delhi, commanded the 1st European Bengal Fusiliers on the day of assault, 14th September 57, until the final evacuation of the city by the rebels on the 20th September 57. ( Wounded in two places, 14th September 57.) Medal and Clasp. Served as Brigade Major with the Hurreeanah Field Force, under General Van Cortland. Present under Brigadier Showers, at the surrender of Jhujjur, in October 57. Commanded a Detachment of Hurreeanah Field Force at the action of Narnoul, 16th November 57. Mentioned in the Despatch of Captain Caulfield, 16th January 58. Received the thanks of Sir John Lawrence for conduct at Narnoul, 1st December 57. Commanded the 22nd Punjab Infantry at the action of Kukrowlee, under General Penny, and at the taking of Bareilly, under Lord Clyde. Mentioned in the Despatch of Lord Clyde, 8th May 58. Promoted to the rank of Brevet-Major for services at Delhi, in 57. Served during the expedition in China, in 60, 61, in Command of the 22nd Punjab Infantry. Medal. Present at the following operations against the Taipsing rebels: capture of stockades at Wong-ka-Dya, 4th April 62; of the stockaded village of Chowpoo, 17th April, and of the stockades near Nezeean, 29th April, at the capture, by assault, of the walled towns of Kahoing, 1st May, Chingpoo, 12th May, Munchiao, 17th May, Isoling, 20th May, and repulse of an immensely superior Force of rebels at Nezeean, 25th May 62. Present at the relief of Kahoing, 26th May 62. Commanded Detachments, 31st Punjab Native Infantry and 22nd Punjab Native Infantry, sent to co-operate with the Naval Force under Sir Hope Grant, for the relief (effected) of Chingpoo, 10th June 62.
