CommentTranscribed from Photographs of Headstone Inscriptions at Lower Circular Road Cemetery, Calcutta, Bengal. Only the vital information of the individual has been recorded. Verse, religious and epitaph text have been omitted. In some cases only name and death date are recorded in accordance with the 100 year rule.

These photographs were taken by members and friends of FIBIS who went on a Family History Tour of [Southern, East, North] India in 2015. Our thanks to Brenda Boggild and Greta Lawrence who took the photographs and has permitted FIBIS to share them.

Inscription  Sir W H MacNaghten Bart of the Bengal Civil Service envoy to the court of Cabul and Governor of Bombay who fell by the hand of an assassin in the insurrection at Cabul on the 23rd day of December 1841 in the 48th year of his age. This memorial is erected by his afflicted widow who rescued his remains and brought them for christian burial to India. They were interred in this cemetery on the 22nd of April 1843.
