This distinguished officer was at the taking of Seringapatam, and of the various forts of Bejaghur, Allyghur, and Bhurtpore where he commanded the forlorn hope. He was also in the battles of Delhi, Agra, Assaye, Sasnee, and Laswarree, and likewise in Colonel Monsons retreat, where he saved the colours of his regiment, having wrapped them around his body. Major Fletcher was likewise in many other engagements & was several times severely wounded. He died aged 44. On the reconstruction of the line, his regiment (the 2d battalion Old 12th), instead of being in rotation, the 24th, was appointed the 1st Regiment Bengal Native Infantry and allowed to wear on the button, a laurel wreath. |
