Body of text  GEORGE WASHINGTON SPROTT, born 6th March 1829, eldest son of John S, a native of Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire, minister at Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia ; educated at various schools in Nova Scotia and at University of Glasgow; BA (1849) ; licensed and ordained for work in the colonies by the Presbytery of Dunoon 1852 ; assistant at St Matthew's and St Andrew's, Halifax, Nova Scotia, 1853-5, Middle Parish, Greenock, and St Michael's Dumfries, 1855-7, chaplain, Scots Church, Kandy, Ceylon, 1857-64 ; acting military chaplain, Portsmouth, 1865, minister of Chaple of Garioch 1866-73 ; presented by Sir Hew Dalrymple, Bart ; translated and admitted 8th May 1873 ; Lecturer on Pastoral Theology 1878 ; DD (Glasgow 1880) ; died at Edinburgh 27th October 1909. He married 1857, Mary (died 29th December, 1874), daughter of Charles John Hill, Halifax, and had issue - Agnes Jean, born 26th September, 1858 (married 1 March 1881, Arthur Kinnaird Wylie, stock-jobber, London) ; Mark John, born 20th May, 1860, died same year ; Lilias Harington, born 1861,died 1866 ; Norman Charles Hill, born November 1863, died 10th May, 1873; Mabel Vivian, born 25th August, 1865 (married 1st September, 1893, Henry Mortimer Rusk, headmaster, Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh) ; Harold George Hill, MA, LLB, Solicitor, Edinburgh, born 23rd April, 1867 ; Margaret Elphinstone, born 5th October, 1869 (married 22nd June, 1898, Lieutenant-Colonel Colin Campbell Renton, Indian Army) ; Wulfric Richard Hill, born 4th October, 1870, died 11 July 1895 ; Oswald Brodie, born 12th April, 1872, died February 1875 ; Violet Mary, born 22nd December, 1874 (married 7th October 1903, Lieutenant-Colonel Daniel Richard Adye, Indian Army).
