He was the last survivor of a worthy family of brothers, and served the Church long and well, both abroad and at home. He married 16th June, 1842, Jane Halkett (died 12th November, 1886), daughter of Colonel Robert Pattullo of Balhouffie, Fife and had issue- Charlotte Stewart, born 7th November, 1834; George, minister of Longformacus; Emily, born 3rd April, 1848 (married Alexander Irvine Robertson, DD minister of Clackmannan); Henry Shank, born and died 1854; Diana (twin) born 1854, died 1855.
