Entry  Born 1815 : educated at Edinburgh High School and University : went into the Bengal medical service : Curator of the museum of the Asiatic Society of Bengal : Superintendent in 1842 of the Saharanpur garden : he vigorously promoted the cultivation of tea in India, obtained plants and distributed them, thus originating the commencement of the present teaplanting industry : retired in 1875 : died March 18, 1882.
