Born 20 Aug 1784 at Eden-farm, near Beckenham, Kent, 2nd son of William, 1st Lord Auckland, by Eleanor, 2nd dau. of the Right Hon. Sir Gilbert Eliot, and sister to Gilbert 1st Earl of Minto. Left England in Sept 1835 to become Governor General of India. Succeeded by Lord Ellenborough, who arrived at Calcutta on the last day of Feb 1842. Made an Earl, 1839. Died unmarried, succeeded by his brother Robert Eden, Bishop of Sodor and Man. A statue of Lord Auckland has recently been sent out for erection in Calcutta, £2000 raised by public subscription] |
