Aged 50. Elder son of the late Lieut.-col. John Drinkwater Bethune, who died in 1844, by Eleanor, dau. of Charles Congalton of Congalton, co. Mid Lothian. BA Cambridge, 1823, called to the bar, Middle Temple, 1827. In 1848 appointed to his position in India. Indian newspapers hostile. His name was associated with a measure which would have meant Europeans in India would be under the criminal jurisdiction of the Company's courts, like native subjects, instead of the special jurisdiction of the supreme courts in the three presidencies. Postponed until Macaulay's criminal code enacted. A measure which did pass was that Hindoo converts to Christianity would no longer be disinherited according to Hindoo law. Also President of the Council of Education. Established a school ""in European hands, for native females of the higher classes"". Died unmarried. Succeeded in his estates by his only brother, Charles Ramsay Drinkwater Bethune, Captain R.N.] |
