Aged 80. Called to the Bar, Middle Temple, 1792. Soon went to Calcutta, where he was advocate at the Supreme Court of Judicature. Enjoyed intimate friendship of the greal oriental scholar Sir William Jones. Ill health meant he returned to England in 1799. He was called on to prepare a charter of justice for Ceylon. In 1801 appointed Chief Justice of its Supreme Court of Judicature, and Judge of its Vice-Admiralty Court. ""While he held the office of Chief Justice he compiled from the Hindoo, Mussulman, and Dutch codes, the system of laws for Ceylon, by which the island is still governed.""
