He served for many years in the 16th Lancers throughout the campaign in Afghanistan 1838.9 and 40. Was present at the siege and capture of Ghuznee 23rd July 1839 and was one of 100 selected from the Regiment who immediately afterwards under the late Brigadier General Cherton started in pursuit of Dhost Mohammed Khan. He also served through the Sutlej Campaign in 1845-6. Was present at the Affair of B?dwal 21st and at the Battle of ??aliveal 28th Jan 1848 where he was severely wounded and had to leave the service .
