Service  Lieutenant-Colonel Stokes served with the Army of the Sutlej in 45, 46. Commanded the 59th Native Infantry from February 46 till the Army broke up. Served with the Jullundur Force under Brigadier Wheeler, in 46, and commanded the 59th Native Infantry from October to December 46. Commanded the Pathan Cavalry during the Mutinies, from August 57 to February 59. Commanded an attack on the mutineers at the village of Moradungger, between Meerut and Delhi, on the 18th September 57, on which occasion the rebels were driven out, and the road opened between the two Stations. Guarded the whole length of the Ganges River, in the Boolundshuhur District, up to the 9th July 58. Present at the action of Gungeeree 14th December 57. Served under Lord Clyde, in Oude, in 58. Medal
