Aged 50. Born 1785 at Saxmundham, Suffolk. Joined the 22nd Regiment, went out to Cape of Good Hope on the Surat East Indiaman. In 1801 moved on to Calcutta, promoted from drummer to corporal. Took part in three forlorn hopes in India. Made Lieutenant in the 76th Regiment, returned home after 10 years away, arrived home Oct 1807. Became a recruiting sergeant at Wakefield, lost all money. Joined 24th Dragoons, made sergeant while at depot, sailed for India Jan 1809 on the Warren Hastings. Sergeant Major, 1813. In 1814 made an ensign in the 87th Foot. Married at Cawnpore, 4 April 1816. Lieutenant, 1821. Court martialed and dismissed from the service, 1823. Wife also died, he returned home in 1825. Had sustained 6 wounds. Published his entertaining ""Memoirs"" in 1829] |
