| Surname | Daws | | First names | H. | | Rank/ occupation | Indigo planter | | Death date | 8 Apr 1839 | | Place of death | Middlesex | | Source | Gentleman's Magazine | | Edition | June 1839 | | Page number | 668 | | Detail | At Juggernaut Cottage, South Mims, aged 84, Mr H. Daws, formerly an indigo planter in the East Indies. On his return to England he would not acknowledge any of his relations, on account of some supposed injuries inflicted by one of the members of his family. He married a half-caste in India, by whom he had two sons, now in Bengal, to whom he has left the bulk of his fortune, amounting to nearly £95,000 subject to two annuities of £50 each to his servants. Since the death of his wife, which took place in 1821, he secluded himself from all society, and allowed his beard to grow to such a length that he was known in the vicinity by the title of the hermit. He had two servants -- the male a Bengalese, a native of Chupra, whom he converted to Christianity; the female an Englishwoman, but so infirm that for some years the domestic duties devolved on the former. Although a recluse, he was not penurious, but, during the winter, supplied blankets, coals, and in many instances food, to the poor inhabitants of the neighbourhood. |
